POSITION TITLE: Middle School Counselor
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A master's degree from an approved program in school counseling or a master's degree from an accredited college or university and completed an approved school guidance and counseling program.
2. Two years of successful full-time teaching experience, two years of successful experience in guidance and counseling, or eligibility for a provisional license.
3. Complete specialized studies in school counseling - middle/high.
4. Ongoing evidence of mental and physical competence to perform assigned responsibilities may be required from a qualified physician.
5. An applicant who has had prior experience in a related position must have a performance rating which is acceptable to Northumberland County Public Schools for such experience.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
OVERVIEW: The school guidance program assists students in becoming responsible students and adults. This position is a full time (11 month) position in the Northumberland Middle School. Continuous attention is given to assisting students to develop competence in decision-making, working with others, and taking responsibility for their own behavior. School counselors also coordinate social emotional supports in-school and with community partner organizations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Implement the guidance curriculum.

Guide and counsel groups of individual students through the development of educational and career plans.

Counsel small groups and individual students with problems.

Consult with teachers, staff and parents regarding the developmental needs of students.

Refer students/families with severe problems to appropriate community resources in consultation with their parents.

Assist school test coordinator for Standardized Achievement Tests and Standards of Learning Tests.

Participate in the VTSS/PBIS team (Positive Behaviorial Interventions and Supports).

Supporting the overall district’s educational program through general consultation activities and committee work.

Assist with the placement of students in appropriate educational settings.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Attend all meetings and training sessions as directed.

Assist administrators with the distribution and interpretation of standardized tests scores for students and parents.

Attend IEP and 504 meetings according to caseload.

Endorsement requirements.
1. Option I. The candidate shall have:
a. Earned a master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a state-approved school counselor preparation program that shall include at least 100 clock hours of internship and practicum experiences in the preK-6 setting and 100 clock hours of internship and practicum experiences in the grades 7-12 setting; and
b. Two years of successful, full-time teaching experience or two years of successful, full-time experience in school counseling in a public or an accredited nonpublic school. Two years of successful, full-time experience in school counseling in a public or an accredited nonpublic school under a nonrenewable Provisional License may be accepted to meet this requirement.
2. Option II. The candidate shall have:
a. Earned a master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university and completed an approved school counselor preparation program that shall include at least 100 clock hours of internship and practicum experiences in the preK-6 setting and 100 clock hours of internship and practicum experiences in the grades 7-12 setting; and
b. Two years of successful, full-time teaching experience or two years of successful, full-time experience in school counseling in a public or an accredited nonpublic school. Two years of successful, full-time experience in school counseling in a public or an accredited nonpublic school under a nonrenewable Provisional License may be accepted to meet this requirement.
