ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, HIGH SCHOOL

Term of Contract: 11 Months

FLSA Classification: Exempt

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The position is responsible for assisting the school principal in the coordination, supervision, and management of the school’s academic programs, operations, and student services.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

  • Assist the principal in developing and maintaining an effective educational program consistent with state and federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies, and goals of the School Board.
  • Meet and confer with students, parents, faculty, and staff; maintain appropriate records and files; and prepare reports as required.
  • Assist the principal in the overall administration of the school; interpret and enforce school and school division policies and regulations.
  • Assist the principal in transforming the school culture into a results-oriented, collaborative learning community.
  • Ensure implementation of the Northumberland County Public Schools approved curriculum and the development of 21st-century skills with all students.
  • Assist the principal in monitoring compliance with federal, state, and local mandates and guidelines related to testing programs, special education, and Section 504.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of Section 504 Plans, ensuring compliance with legal and procedural requirements.
  • Assist the principal in planning and implementing a professional development and growth program for teachers and staff.
  • Serve as principal in the absence of the regular principal.
  • Propose schedules of classes and extracurricular activities; assist in scheduling courses, students, and teachers.
  • Work with department heads and faculty in compiling annual budget requests.
  • Requisition supplies, textbooks, and equipment; conduct inventories; maintain records; and verify receipts of materials.
  • Assist in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other school support services; help conduct safety inspections and emergency drill practices.
  • Assist in the reporting and monitoring of student attendance.
  • Assist in maintaining student discipline; handle special cases as necessary.
  • Serve with parents, faculty, and student groups, as requested, in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
  • Maintain a variety of records and prepare periodic and special reports as required.
  • Identify the special needs of students and seek assistance from school system specialists when appropriate.
  • Supervise teachers and departments as assigned by the principal.
  • Explain and interpret division-wide curriculum and instructional goals and objectives to teachers, parents, students, and the community.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of systematic methods for supervising instruction through learning walks, observations, documentation, and follow-up conferences.
  • Assist teachers in evaluating instructional methods and materials, developing effective lesson plans, and improving classroom management techniques.
  • Assist in the coordination and supervision of guidance and counseling services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Attend all meetings as directed by the supervisor.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor and district office administration.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of administrative and supervisory practices, methods, laws,and techniques.
  • Ability to lead, organize, and evaluate instructional and operational programs.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to motivate staff and students to reach their fullest potential.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students, teachers, support staff, and community members.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Master’s Degree in Educational Administration or a related field required. Considerable teaching experience and an endorsement in Administration and Supervision, PreK–12 required. A comparable combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Salary: Based on the NCPS Administrative Salary Scale, commensurate with experience and qualifications
