FULL TIME CUSTODIAN

12-Month Position

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Building Administrator, the Director of Maintenance & Facilities, and the Custodial Supervisor, the Custodian performs routine custodial work in the care, cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing of the assigned school building and facilities.


Hold at least a High School diploma, G.E.D., or any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduating from high school.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be able to work during inclement weather.
  2. Ongoing evidence of mental and physical competence to perform assigned responsibilities may be required from a qualified physician.
  3. Responsiveness to directives and direct supervision.
  4. Dependability in attendance.
  5. An applicant who has had prior experience in a related position must have a performance rating which is acceptable to Northumberland County Public Schools for such experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment and procedures.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of mandated safety regulations such as Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and Virginia Occupational Safety & Health (VOSH).
  3. Physical stamina to engage in daily deep cleaning.

  1. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with fellow employees.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to follow written and oral instructions; knowledge of English grammar and usage.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively and positively with staff, students and community.

  6. Ability to operate equipment, such as vacuum, floor machine, sanitation and disinfecting tools, etc.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1.    Appropriately clean and maintain assigned area as outlined in the list of specific tasks.
  2.    Maintain assigned closet in neat, clean order.
  3.    Maintain all assigned supplies and equipment.
  4.    Arrange for needed repairs or replacement of equipment through Head Custodian.
  5.    Request supplies from Head Custodian.
  6.    Keep all equipment clean.
  7.    Secure and/or unlock school building and facilities.
  8.    Move furniture or equipment within building as required for various activities.
  9.    Attend all general and in service meetings.
  10.    Assist with simple repairs and equipment replacement throughout the school, e.g., adjust furniture, perform daily upkeep of all floor scrubbing equipment such as pad and propane tank changeouts, replace light bulbs (within building).
  11.    Complete scheduled stripping and waxing.
  12.    Be knowledgeable of alarm system.
  13.    Notify Head Custodian, Principal/Custodial Supervisor regarding absence from work.
  14.    Follow all policies and procedures regarding mandated safety regulations such as OSHA, Hazard Communication, etc.
  15.    Assist with the county recycling program.
  16.    Serve as an optimal role model for students, colleagues, and the general public.
  17.    Maintain a record of appropriate attendance and punctuality.
  18.    Maintain a clean, neat appearance, appropriate to position.
  19.    Actively pursue professional growth activities.
  20.    Comply with all district and school policies and regulations.
  21.    Perform other duties as assigned by Director of Facilities and Maintenance / Custodial Supervisor.   

 SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Attendance during inclement weather to address and remove snow, ice, etc.
  2. Attendance at evening /weekend events.
