Position Summary

Northumberland County Public Schools is seeking dependable and hardworking individuals to serve as Substitute Custodians. Substitute Custodians provide custodial support on an as-needed basis to help maintain clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environments for students, employees, and visitors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and other assigned areas.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and clean windows and other surfaces.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers and properly dispose of waste.
  • Replenish restroom and custodial supplies.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces.
  • Assist with setting up and breaking down rooms for meetings, activities, and special events.
  • Report safety hazards, maintenance concerns, damages, and needed repairs.
  • Follow division procedures for the safe use and storage of cleaning products and equipment.
  • Secure assigned areas by checking doors, windows, and lights as directed.
  • Respond appropriately to spills and other custodial needs.
  • Follow all NCPS safety, confidentiality, and workplace policies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous custodial, housekeeping, or facilities experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned duties promptly.
  • Dependable attendance, punctuality, and professional conduct.
  • Ability to work effectively around students, employees, and the public.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks and pre-employment requirements.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb stairs for extended periods.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Safely operate standard custodial equipment.
  • Work with cleaning products while following all safety procedures.
  • Perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Schedule

This is an on-call, as-needed position. Assignments, work locations, and hours may vary based on school division needs. Availability for daytime and evening assignments is preferred.

Compensation

Compensation will be based on the Northumberland County Public Schools approved substitute pay rate.
